The primary purpose of the Mac OS X 10.6.8 update, released on 6/23/11, is to prep Macs to upgrade to Lion (which will likely require 10.6.8 or later installed). This update also provides a dozen fixes/changes including: faster OpenGL performance, improved IPv6 support, improved VPN reliability, auto detection/removal of MacDefender malware variants (previously included with the 2011-003 Security Update), OpenType font and PostScript printing fixes, and improvements to third-party PDF viewing.

If you have a FireWire drive with Snow Leopard installed in it, and update it to Mac OS X 10.6.8, the FireWire drive will now boot Thunderbolt equipped Macs. 10.6.7 would not, which made deploying images challenging.
