Last month I mentioned that OS X 10.8 (a.k.a. Mountain Lion, due out this Summer) has removed Software Update, and forces you to get all Apple Updates through the Mac App Store. I recently learned that Mountain Lion also has a new feature called Gatekeeper, which was developed to prevent any app from being installed that isn’t downloaded through the Mac App Store.
Luckily, at least in the latest beta version of Mountain Lion, this feature can be disabled… but it definitely gives you a glimpse into the direction Apple is moving. I predict a day in the very near future where you’ll have to jailbreak your Mac in order to install apps that aren’t “approved by Apple” and downloaded through the Mac App Store.
