Apple announced during the keynote at WWDC 2013 that the next version of OS X (10.9) will be released this Fall, and they are calling it OS X Mavericks.
Apple joked that they have run out of big cat names, so going forward, future versions of OS X will be named out places in California that inspire them. Mavericks is a popular surfing location south of San Francisco.
Interestingly enough, this surfing spot was nicknamed after a German Shepard dog. Mavericks was owned by Matt Warshaw, an early surfing pioneer who took the dog on trip there back in 1961. The story is chronicled in Matt’s book “Mavericks: The Story of Big-Wave Surfing”.
