Microsoft is now offering a new way to run their iPad versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Previously you had to have an Office 365 account to enable these free apps to do anything more than open/view files… but now Microsoft is letting iPad users pay for them monthly via an in-app purchase.

These monthly subscriptions run $6.99 for a personal license, or $9.99 for a home license (for up to 5 iPads). Once you sign up the subscription automatically renews every month, but you can disable the account at any time.

Also included in the monthly subscription is the option to additionally install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote on a Mac or PC… so if you subscribe to the monthly $9.99 home license you can install the Office apps on up to 5 iPads and 5 computers.
