AdwareMedic was a shareware utility that removed adware from Macs. It was a one-trick-pony, but it did that trick very well. Even EtreCheck’s scan report recommends running AdwareMedic when it finds adware, because the manual process of removing the most common Mac adware (Genieo, Conduit, VSearch) can be tricky.

Malwarebytes recently acquired AdwareMedic, and the utility has been rebranded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. Malwarebytes also hired Thomas Reed, the longtime author and developer of AdwareMedic.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is free “for home use only”. The business edition is “coming soon”.

One thing to note about Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac… Despite it’s name, it currently only removes adware. The ability to check for Mac malware will be added to future versions. This is fine by me, because adware is becoming a common annoyance on Macs, where Mac malware is almost nonexistent.
