The SMC reset process has been updated for Macs that have an Apple T2 chip, including: iMac Pros and newer model Mac mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro.  Apple posted this revised SMC reset process on 11/8/2018…

Desktop Macs computers with a T2 chip…

  • Choose Apple menu > Shut Down
  • After your Mac shuts down, press and hold its power button for 10 seconds
  • Release the power button, then wait a few seconds
  • Press the power button again to turn the Mac on

If that doesn’t fix the problem…

  • Choose Apple menu > Shut Down
  • After your Mac shuts down, unplug the power cable
  • Wait 15 seconds
  • Plug the power cable back in
  • Wait 5 seconds
  • Press the power button to turn the Mac on

MacBooks with a T2 chip…

  • Choose Apple menu > Shut Down
  • After your Mac shuts down, press and hold its power button for 10 seconds
  • Release the power button, then wait a few seconds
  • Press the power button again to turn the Mac on

If that doesn’t fix the problem…

  • Choose Apple menu > Shut Down
  • After your Mac shuts down, press and hold the following for 7 seconds:
    • Right shift key
    • The left option key
    • The left control key
    • Power button
  • Release everything, then wait a few seconds
  • Press the power button to turn the Mac on
